CAPU Traveling Exhibition: Honoring the History of Denver’s Historic Chinatown

CAPU's traveling exhibition has evolved from its initial four-panel installation, which debuted in 2022, to a comprehensive eight-panel display completed in 2024. This expanded pop-up exhibition continues to honor and visualize the rich history and contributions of early Chinese immigrants in Denver. The design, inspired by traditional Chinese laundry drying racks, pays tribute to the laundries that became community hubs for resilience and entrepreneurship.

Historical Context
Chinese immigrants in Denver faced exclusion and discrimination in many industries, leading to the establishment of laundries as a primary means of survival. This exhibition not only highlights these businesses but also honors their role as community centers and symbols of resistance. The exhibit documents the history of Denver’s Chinatown from its early days through the present, exploring the broader narratives of the AANHPI community.

Expansion in 2024
The newly expanded eight-panel exhibition offers a deeper dive into the history, culture, and future of Denver’s Chinatown. The additional panels allow for a more nuanced exploration of the AANHPI experience and provide a broader platform for the voices and stories from the community. Special thank you to Yellow Dog Printing, Gabe Refinishing, and HDR Inc. We are deeply grateful to Julie Tran, and the Colorado Asian Pacific United Arts Architecture and Design Team. We are especially thankful to our volunteers, Maggie Hua, Diem Tran, and board member Ben Niamthet.

Host This Exhibition
CAPU is seeking host sites to share this important piece of AANHPI history with the community. Hosting this eight-panel traveling exhibition offers a unique opportunity to educate, engage, and build understanding across communities. The exhibition is available as a 12-week pop-up installation, providing an in-depth exploration of Denver’s Chinatown and the broader AANHPI experience.
